Words are amazing. They empower us to inform, delight and intrigue our audiences. You can use words to

 

  • Tell a story

  • Give valuable advice

  • Convey the benefits of your offer

  • Win over and retain new clients and consumers 

 

Still, we need to remember that all written communication—online or offline—delivers an indirect message about the writer, the company or the brand. In other words, the way we use language can influence the way the recipient consumes and digests our message.

 

 

You can add some spice, dress it up and throw in a bit of theatrics, if that is your thing. Exciting, right? Yes, but there is a catch. It all starts with words and sentences.  

 

So what is the problem?

 

Spelling mistakes, commonly confused words, missing punctuation, incorrect grammar and typos are all reputation-threatening tornadoes that may pass unnoticed, but they also have the potential to wreak havoc.

 

 

Here are a few possibilities of how the mistakes mentioned above could be interpreted by people (and the emotions it could evoke):

 

a) "Is this grammar correct?" (Doubtful)

b) "I don't get it. Shouldn't there be a comma? It sounds funny." (Confused) 

c) "I can forgive this one mistake, let's hope I don't find others..." (Sceptical)

d) "This company obviously doesn't care about its image or product." (Disappointed) 

e) "It really is just a typo that the writer failed to see, even after proofreading." (Tolerant)

f) "They couldn't even be bothered to look up the correct spelling of this word!" (Shocked) 

g) "Seriously, who still confuses "your" and "you're"? I can't read this anymore." (Intolerant)

 

Mistakes cause distractions and lead to doubt. Doubt eats at trust and respect, which could eventually affect loyalty and the relationships you have worked so hard to form and foster. Yet, doubt is mild compared to disappointment, shock and intolerance. Doubt can be cleared. Disappointment may be forgiven. Shock or intolerance? Chance blown.
